Claudette Bradshaw Honours the Winners of the "Racism. Stop It!" National Video Competition

TORONTO, March 21, 2002 -- Minister of Labour and Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Claudette Bradshaw today honoured the 10 winning teams of the "Racism. Stop It!" National Video Competition, at a ceremony marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

For decades now, on March 21, Canada has observed the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. For the last six years, the National Video Competition has successfully mobilized youth in taking a stand against discrimination. This competition, sponsored by Panasonic Canada Inc., gives students from 12 to 18 years of age an opportunity to express their thoughts on the elimination of racial discrimination.

"I would like to say how proud I am of everyone who took part in the competition", said Minister Bradshaw. "Their enthusiasm and concern inspire me. The videos give me hope that Canada will continue to be an open, democratic country, where everyone feels welcome and can participate in society."

This year, more than 1100 students, representing 342 teams from every province and territory across the country, were engaged in this competition. The 2002 winning videos can be viewed on the March 21 Web site at www.march21.gc.ca

The March 21 Campaign highlights the Government of Canada's commitment to promoting respect and diversity and connection between Canadians, as stated in the Speech from the Throne and the last federal budget.
