New Executive Director Appointment to the Canadian Race Relations Foundation

OTTAWA, September 21, 2001 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Hedy Fry today announced the appointment of Dr. Karen R. Mock as Executive Director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation. This three-year appointment is effective October 15, 2001

Dr. Mock, who for the last 12 years was the National Director of the League for Human Rights of B'Nai Brith Canada, recently chaired the Advisory Committee on Canada's preparations for the UN World Conference Against Racism held in Durban, South Africa. She is a registered psychologist and certified teacher specializing in human development, interpersonal communication, multiculturalism and race relations.

"Dr. Mock brings to the Foundation a tremendous wealth of experience and a sound knowledge of race relations and the issues facing a multicultural, diverse Canadian society", stated the Honorable Dr. Fry. "Her national and international reputation, network and expertise will contribute a great deal to our collaborative efforts to eliminate racism and racial discrimination".

Over the years, Dr. Mock assisted numerous organizations and agencies in the public and private sectors with staff and management training programs, and the development and implementation of equitable recruitment and employment policies. She directed several projects, in particular "Victim Impact of Racially Motivated Crime" for the Commission on Systemic Racism in the Ontario Justice System. Furthermore, she has conducted research and published widely in the areas of multiculturalism and race relations, including research reports and articles for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, i.e.: "Increasing Awareness of Race Relations in Canada : the role, impact and potential of public education campaigns" and "Race Relations Training in Canada: Towards the Development of Professional Standards".

"We are all well aware of Dr. Mock's reputation", said the Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, Chair of the Foundation. He added, "We are delighted to welcome her as Executive Director of the Foundation and look forward to working closely with her".

The Canadian Race Relations Foundation was established in 1996 to facilitate the development, sharing and application of knowledge and expertise in order to contribute to the elimination of racism and all forms of racial discrimination in Canada. The Toronto-based Foundation provides a knowledge base from which governments, all segments of civil society, academia, business, labour, and community organizations can draw for the development of effective race relations policies and practices. The Foundation also disseminates information to increase public awareness of the importance of eliminating racism.
