The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Multicultural Association of Fredericton

FREDERICTON, January 9, 2003 -- Andy Scott, Member of Parliament (Fredericton), on behalf of Secretary of State
(Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $20,000 for the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, through the Public Education Projects of the Multiculturalism Program.

"The Government of Canada is committed to ensure equality for all Canadians by contributing funding to organisations dedicated to advancing the objectives of Canada's Multiculturalism Policy," said Mr. Scott.

"I am pleased the Multiculturalism Program is supporting this valuable initiative," said Secretary of State Augustine. "As we know, Canada's rich history is based on our diversity and our ability to foster development and full participation for all citizens regardless of their race, language or religion."

Funding was provided to the Multicultural Association of Fredericton to implement an initiative to improve public education efforts in the greater Fredericton community about the contributions of the multicultural community, the benefits of celebrating diversity, and the importance of combatting racism.

Through the Public Education Projects initiative of the Multiculturalism Program, the Department of Canadian Heritage provides funding to projects that seek to improve public understanding of multiculturalism and racism and contribute to informed public dialogue and action on issues related to ethnic and racial diversity in Canada, and other broad social issues affecting their communities.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
