Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Strengthening Hamilton's Community Initiative

HAMILTON, January 10, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament (Hamilton East) Sheila Copps, on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $207,000 for the Strengthening Hamilton's Community Initiative.

The Initiative is a result of Mayor Robert E. Wade's response to the events of September 11, 2001. He gathered key leaders from various sectors who participated in community roundtable discussions and developed broad-based strategies to strengthen community bonds and reaffirm the fundamental values shared by Hamilton's residents. This 24-month project will facilitate the success of community-based efforts.

"I am pleased that the Multiculturalism Program supports this valuable initiative," said Secretary of State Augustine. "As we know, Canada's rich history is based on diversity and the ability to foster the development and full participation of all our citizens, regardless of their race, language or religion."

"Strengthening Hamilton's Community Initiative is dedicated to developing a vibrant and harmonious community that values Hamilton's racial, religious and cultural diversity. This project will foster respect and encourage public dialogue," said Minister Copps. "The Government of Canada is proud to support the Community Outreach Facilitation component of this project."

"Strengthening Hamilton's Community Initiative will deploy strategies to promote the safety and security of all Hamilton residents," said Member of Parliament (Hamilton West) Stan Keyes. "Participants will help combat racism, foster interfaith and intercultural understanding and respect, and promote leadership."

"By focusing on research, education and community dialogue, the Strengthening Hamilton's Community Initiative will make an invaluable contribution to the quality of life in the Greater Hamilton-Wentworth area," said Member of Parliament (Hamilton Mountain) Beth Phinney.

The Department of Canadian Heritage's Multiculturalism Program serves three key purposes, all of which are dedicated to making Canada a better place to live. The Multiculturalism Program fosters Canadian identity and belonging, encourages all citizens to participate in shaping their communities and their country, and ensures an equitable society by eliminating barriers to participation in society.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
