Dhaliwal Announces $17,600 in Funding for the Multicultural Heritage Society of Prince George

VANCOUVER, January 15, 2003 -- Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament (Vancouver South-Burnaby), on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $17,600 for the Multicultural Heritage Society of Prince George's new project, "A Face on Diversity: Understanding the Experiences of First Nations and Visible Minorities within the Workplace."

"The Government of Canada is pleased to offer support for this project, which emphasizes the values Canadians share to create a just and equal society, one in which respect and diversity are paramount," explained Mr. Dhaliwal.

"Promoting shared citizenship is a primary direction of the Multiculturalism Policy. Providing support to this project helps ensure all Canadians have the opportunity to participate fully and actively in the economic, cultural and social life of the country," said Ms. Augustine. "This study will provide a basis for understanding racism in the workplace and also make recommendations to the business community of Prince George on how to foster an inclusive work environment."

One of the objectives of the study is to determine the extent of racial discrimination and other barriers to inclusion faced by minorities in local workplaces in Prince George. Based on the results, the Multicultural Heritage Society will develop an educational program for both employers and employees. A report will be issued that includes recommendations for action by various local organizations.

This project is being supported locally by representatives from the University of Northern British Columbia, Central Interior Native Health Centre, Prince George Labour Council and the Employment Counselor of the Immigrant & Multicultural Services Society.

Canada's Multiculturalism Policy, which falls under the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.
Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
