Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Sudbury Multicultural/Folk Art Association's Charter of Rights Activities

SUDBURY, January 29, 2003 -- Diane Marleau, Member of Parliament (Sudbury), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $5,000 in funding for the Sudbury Multicultural/Folk Art Association. This funding will enable the Association to carry out activities to educate members of immigrant and minority communities in the Sudbury area on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

"The activities proposed by the Sudbury Multicultural/Folk Art Association celebrate our diversity and reinforce the Charter's protection of our multicultural heritage," said Ms. Marleau. "The Charter has become a symbol of the values we hold dear and of what we wish to achieve as a people."

The Sudbury Multicultural/Folk Art Association proposes to undertake several activities, including a panel lecture at Laurentian University, a poster competition, and a one-day conference and workshop. The poster competition aims to develop awareness of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms among young people in grades 6 to12. The one-day conference and workshop will examine the importance of the Charter to Canada's young first and second generation immigrants.

The Human Rights Program promotes the development, understanding, respect for and enjoyment of human rights in Canada. This includes providing financial support to eligible organizations.

Funding for this program was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
