Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Building Bridges Between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal People in Prince Edward Initiative

CHARLOTTETOWN, February 7, 2003 -- Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament (Hillsborough), on behalf of Secretary of State
(Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $9,000 for the Cooper Institute Ltd. to help finance its Building Bridges Between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal People in Prince Edward Island initiative.

"The Government of Canada recognizes the important work of local groups to encourage the full participation of all citizens of different cultures regardless of race, religion or language," said Secretary of State Augustine. "Multiculturalism contributes to social cohesion and provides a strong voice and many opportunities for everyone."

"Prince Edward Island is regarded as the birthplace of Confederation," said Mr. Murphy. "Since 1867, Canada has become a world leader in many fields and none more so than multiculturalism. This project reaffirms the Government's commitment to celebrate our diversity, to respect all cultures, and to reinforce our shared citizenship."

Funding for this project was provided to develop, implement, and evaluate a community education program that would provide information and hands-on experience regarding history, cultural expression, and current issues facing First Nations communities, in general, and the Mi'kmaq First Nation, specifically. This cross-cultural understanding project will also identify actions that will challenge stereotypes and continue the work of increasing public education on First Nations issues, as well as encouraging mainstream communities to work with Aboriginal communities in concrete ways.

Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
