Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts

CHARLOTTETOWN, February 24, 2003 -- Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament (Hillsborough), on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $4,000 for the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts for Student Art Expo 2002.

"I am pleased to support this project which helped promote Canada's rich multicultural history to the youth of Prince Edward Island," said Secretary of State Augustine.

"I am proud to be part of a Government that recognizes the importance of Canada's shared citizenship and the need to create a just and equitable society," said Mr. Murphy.

Funding was provided to the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts for its province-wide student art expo, which was held from November 23 to December 16, 2002. The event contributed to the goals of the Multiculturalism Program by fighting racism, advancing positive inter-group relations, and promoting respect for diversity in schools across the province.

Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between communities and individuals of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its
Multiculturalism Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
