Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Prince Edward Island Multicutural Council Inc.

OTTAWA, March 21, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine today announced funding of $8,500 for the Prince Edward Island Multicultural Council Inc. to help finance its 5th Annual Harmony Evening initiative.

"Canadians must work together to eliminate racial discrimination all across Canada," said Secretary of State Augustine. "Our society is based on diversity and on the ability to foster full participation of all Canadians. This initiative reaffirms our government's commitment to celebrate our rich racial, ethnic and religious diversity, to respect all cultures, and to reinforce our shared citizenship. I congratulate the Prince Edward Island Multicultural Council Inc. and all the partners involved in this great initiative."

The Prince Edward Island Multicultural Council Inc., in partnership with the PEI Human Rights Commission, the Canadian Human Rights Commission, Scotiabank, and the RCMP, organizes the 5th Annual Harmony Evening to recognize the importance of March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, as well as the need to offer activities promoting intergroup harmony.

Canada's Multiculturalism Program promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism program. Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
