Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Action Week Against Racism

MONTREAL, April 29, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $99,735 for Images Interculturelles to help finance its 4th Action Week Against Racism, held from March 14 to 24, 2003.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support this week of innovative and varied activities that sparks reflection on racism and its consequences and raises public awareness," said Secretary of State Augustine.

The main goal of Action Week Against Racism is to stimulate thought on racism to increase both understanding of racism and the will to fight it in all its forms. The annual Action Week is part of a series of activities highlighting March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Built around the Science and Racism theme, this year's programming has four components: cultural and educational activities, debates, and special events. Each of these components will feature several activities encouraging reflection on and prevention of intolerance, xenophobia, and hateful acts.

Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
