Government of Canada Announces Funding for Social Planning Council of the Sudbury Region

SUDBURY, August 6, 2003 -- Diane Marleau, Member of Parliament (Sudbury), on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $41,000 for the Building Inclusive Community project.

"This project marks a government partnership with community groups for the betterment of Sudbury," said Ms. Marleau. "By communicating with each other, partners and members of the community can identify, and ultimately break down, the systemic barriers that exist in our society."

"I am proud to support a project which studies the sources and effects of racism, and aims to eliminate it," said Secretary of State Augustine. "Residents of the Greater Sudbury Area can use projects such as this one to build a healthy, safer, and stronger community."

Undertaken by the Social Planning Council of the Sudbury Region, the Building Inclusive Community project involves the design and implementation of a study on racism and discrimination in the Greater Sudbury Area. A committee representing people most affected by the issue will be created. Survey methodology will be designed and tested, and through methods such as focus groups and personal interviews, data will be gathered and analyzed.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. This program promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
