Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Boundary Multicultural Society

GRAND FORKS, August 27, 2003 -- The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada and Member of Parliament (Vancouver South - Burnaby), on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $24,820 for the Boundary Multicultural Society's Multicultural Awareness and Education Project.

"This initiative is an important step in addressing the need for better cross-cultural understanding in our communities," said Minister Dhaliwal. "I am pleased that the Government of Canada supports this organization as it seeks to promote concepts of multiculturalism and shared citizenship to the residents of South Central British Columbia."

"Through Canada's Multiculturalism Policy, we help Canadians bridge differences, deepen their understanding of one another, and build shared values," said Secretary of State Augustine. "This project will help to ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to participate fully and actively in the economic, cultural, and social life of the country."

The Boundary Multicultural Society will design and deliver a number of multicultural, educational, and partnership-building initiatives targeting educators, students, health care professionals, and cultural groups. Educators and educational leaders will participate in research and receive diversity training, while local students will benefit from in-class presentations on topics related to multiculturalism and anti-racism. Health care providers and representatives of cultural groups will take part in research and information sessions targeted to raising cultural awareness and enhancing knowledge of available health care services.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. This Program promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
