Government of Canada Supports Multiculturalism Symposium for Youth

WINNIPEG, September 11, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $30,740 to support the upcoming Manitoba Multiculturalism Symposium.

"The spirit of the future is already motivating young men and women across Canada," said Minister Copps. "Ours is a country in which all citizens are encouraged to participate actively in public discourse. I am proud to support Manitoba's young people in their efforts to do just that."

"The cooperation, energy, and vision of Canadians of all backgrounds are invaluable to pursuing the goals of multiculturalism," said Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine. "Together, we will ensure that all citizens are empowered to participate fully in the ongoing task of building Canada. Young people have a vital role to play in this process."

The Symposium will provide youth with the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on Canada's diversity and inclusiveness. It will also allow youth to discuss solutions to the challenges of living in a diverse society. By participating in this event, youth will gain a greater appreciation of other cultures and perspectives, and will be encouraged to take an active role in their communities in promoting peace and understanding between different peoples.

The Symposium is being organized by the Manitoba Multiculturalism Symposium Steering Committee, which is composed of representatives from various ethnocultural community groups in Manitoba. It will take place in Winnipeg from October 3 to 5, 2003.

The Department of Canadian Heritage, through its Multiculturalism Program, is providing $30,740 in funding to the Manitoba Multiculturalism Symposium. Canada's multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for the project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
