Government of Canada Announces Funding for Centre Jeunesse Arabe

MONTRÉAL, October 29, 2003 -- Eleni Bakopanos, Member of Parliament (Ahuntsic), on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $17,700 for the Centre Jeunesse Arabe to support its Sans frontières awareness program.

"There is no doubt that education and exchanges, particularly among youth, are powerful ways to build a Canada that respects cultural diversity," said Ms. Bakopanos. "I am very pleased that our government supports the Centre in its efforts to promote openness and respect in our society."

"Canada is one of the first countries to recognize the importance of promoting and supporting ethnic, racial and religious diversity," said Secretary of State Augustine. "Projects such as this one by the Centre Jeunesse Arabe will help us achieve our goal of fostering a more inclusive and harmonious country for future generations of Canadians."

Developed by the Centre Jeunesse Arabe, the Sans frontières project will create awareness and enriching educational activities for the public focusing on the Muslim and Arab communities. The project will make social and community workers and youth more aware of stereotypes, encourage better intervention within communities, and create a better atmosphere of mutual support and fellowship among youth. Several workshops will be organized to promote mutual understanding, and a writing contest will encourage youth to write about the Arab and Muslim communities.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society by people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
