Government of Canada Announces Funding for Christian Cultural Association of South Asians

KINGSTON, October 30, 2003 -- Peter Milliken, Member of Parliament (Kingston and the Islands), today welcomed the announcement by Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine that the Christian Cultural Association of South Asians will receive $58,480 in funding to support the Strengthening Capacity-Building and Sustainability Symposium 2003.

"The Strengthening Capacity-Building and Sustainability Symposium will provide South-Asian Canadians with the training and knowledge to develop their management and leadership skills, and to address employment-related issues," said Mr. Milliken. "I am pleased that the Christian Cultural Association of South Asians are receiving financial support for this important initiative."

"The project will invite dialogue and empower South-Asian Canadians to participate fully in Canadian society," said Ms. Augustine. "The workshops will promote integration and understanding between South Asian Canadians and other citizens of Canada."

The one-day national symposium, along with five one-day training sessions across Canada, will focus on domestic issues affecting South-Asian immigrants, with an emphasis on women and youth.

The Christian Cultural Association of South Asians (CCASA) was established in 1995. It is a non-political and not-for-profit organization that makes strategic investments for building healthy, sustainable, and caring communities in Canada. The CCASA has chapters across the country that help preserve South-Asian culture and heritage, and work to eliminate barriers to integration in Canadian society.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society by people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
