Government of Canada announces funding for the association pour l'éducation interculturelle du Québec

MONTRÉAL, November 19, 2003 -- Pierre Pettigrew, Minister for International Trade and Member of Parliament (PapineauÑSt-Denis), on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $15,000 for the Association pour l'éducation interculturelle du Québec to help organize the "Accommodement raisonnable: un instrument pour gérer la diversité culturelle" symposium.

"I am proud to announce the Government of Canada's support for this initiative. Promoting discussion about how we manage Canada's cultural diversity is an essential part of ensuring the full participation of all Canadians in our society," said Minister Pettigrew.

"This project will cultivate a common understanding of effective ways to address some of the challenges presented by Canada's multiculturalism," said Secretary of State Augustine. "It is through facing our challenges head-on that Canada truly benefits from the strength of our diversity."

The symposium will encourage debate on how communities can live together while negotiating differences, as well as discussion of the socio-cultural and political issues related to pluralism and the need to accommodate shared values and respect individual differences.

This event will include workshops and presentations by experts in the field including researchers, lawyers, and cultural community and government representatives.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes the active and equitable participation of men and women of all origins in Canadian society. It promotes community action against racism and the elimination of institutional systemic barriers. It also encourages public institutions to respect and take into account Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
