Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society of Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE, December 8, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine today announced funding of $39,412 for the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society of Prince George to help finance the Northern Outreach Program: Working Together to Combat Racism.

"Expressions of hate have no place in Canadian society," said Secretary of State Augustine. "Through initiatives like the Northern Outreach Program: Working Together to Combat Racism, we can build a Canada in which acts of hatred and racism are eliminated."

With this new project, the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society of Prince George will lead a series of symposia in northern British Columbia communities to respond to cultural conflict, racism, and hate-motivated activities. The project will help increase awareness of these issues and will provide training and self-help resources to victims and victim groups. It will also encourage the active participation of local ethno-cultural, racial, and religious groups to develop a community action plan to fight racism.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
