Publication to highlight Chinese immigration to Prince Edward Island

CHARLOTTETOWN, March 9, 2004 -- The Honourable Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament (Hillsborough), on behalf of the Honourable Jean Augustine, Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women), today announced funding for Island Studies Press to help it publish an account of Chinese immigration to the Island.

"Canadians of all ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds have stories to tell and a history to share. We must work together to preserve these stories and create a cultural legacy to pass on to future generations," said Mr. Murphy. "I am proud that the Government of Canada is supporting Island Studies Press in its efforts to publish this book, which will allow Islanders to discover the important contributions of Chinese immigrants to this region and this country."

"The Government of Canada is committed to building a strong and vibrant country that is open to diversity," said Minister of State Augustine. "This book constitutes an excellent tool to foster constructive dialogue, respect, and cross-cultural understanding between communities."

Island Studies Press will receive $6,000 to research, design, and edit a book entitled Chinese Islanders: Finding a Home in the New World, which will chronicle the early and current history of Chinese immigrants to the Island through their collective and individual stories. It will be the latest publication in the Island Studies Series, and will be the subject of a new publicity campaign.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
