Official Launch of the 5th Action Week Against Racism

MONTRÉAL, March 19, 2004 -- On the occasion of the launch of the 5th Action Week Against Racism, the Honourable Jean Augustine, Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women), today announced the participation of the Government of Canada in a variety of activities throughout this period. The Action Week Against Racism takes place in Montréal and other cities across Quebec from March 19 to 28.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to support activities that highlight Canadians' willingness to work towards a society based on equality and respect," said Minister of State Augustine. "Congratulations to the organizers, whose exemplary work helps make Canada a place where people of all origins can actively participate in their community, and no one is left behind."

The Action Week Against Racism is an opportunity for sharing ideas, raising cultural awareness of racism, and bringing cultures closer together. This year's edition will feature workshops, films, and comedy performances that focus on the theme of Governments, Borders and Racism. This week is part of a series of activities held in conjunction with March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Financial assistance of $99,815 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
