The Economic Benefits of Diversity Minister of State Augustine Makes Presentation to the Economic Club of Toronto

TORONTO, March 31, 2004 -- "Diversity characterizes Canada, and we need to take full advantage of the considerable economic benefits this can bring to our country," said Jean Augustine, Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women), today, at a keynote speech at the Economic Club of Toronto.

Speaking to a group of some 100 members of the Economic Club--which includes leaders in labour and education, as well as the private and public sectors and other community leaders, from the Toronto region--Minister of State Augustine reminded the audience that: "Diversity not only contributes to our social and cultural life, it brings vitality to research, development, innovation, and business practices."

In her address, Minister of State Augustine touched on issues such as:

Ï the need to end gender and race-based discrimination throughout corporations;
Ï the ethnic business and trade organizations that have opened up new markets for Canada; and
Ï the educated pool of workers who are under-utilized, and immigrant professionals who have credentials that are not recognized in Canada.

In addition to presenting the benefits that diversity provides to the Canadian economy, Minister of State Augustine spoke of the challenges. "Many Canadians are disadvantaged by factors such as race, ethnicity, religion, or gender. The business community has an important role to play racism and discrimination affect individuals and groups, but also cast a huge blight on the reputation of towns and cities."

Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to respect and promote Canada's multicultural character.
