HAMILTON, May 10, 2004 -- "We are fortunate to live in a country that values the diversity of our youth," said the Honourable Jean Augustine, Minister of State (Multiculturalism and Status of Women), on the evening of the Caribbean Potpourri Youth Support Programme's 20th Anniversary Variety Benefit Gala. "This event provides a perfect opportunity to highlight this organization's longstanding dedication to Hamilton's youth, and gives area residents the chance to enjoy Caribbean entertainment and other local talent."
The Minister of State spoke to approximately 500 members of the Hamilton community, representatives from multiculturalism groups, youth groups and the general public in attendance at the gala. She said, "Canada's capacity to respect, embrace and celebrate one another's differences has made us an open, creative and compassionate society that is admired around the world."
In her remarks, Minister of State Augustine emphasized that:
Ï Canada must be a country where everyone has the opportunity to fully and actively participate in society and where all people should be treated with dignity.
Ï Multiculturalism is one of Canada's greatest assets. It is incumbent upon every Canadian to put into practice every day the values of respect, inclusion and equality.
Minister of State Augustine added, "I am proud to be here representing the Government of Canada at an event that showcases our country's rich cultural mosaic."
Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation of people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to respect and promote Canada's multicultural character.
