Secretary of State Sheila Finestone congratulates Prix Gémeaux finalists

MONTRÉAL, Sept. 26, 1994 - Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Status of Women, Sheila Finestone, today congratulated finalists in the Prix Gémeaux at a reception held in Montréal. The awards will be handed out on Oct. 2, 1994.

Mrs. Finestone took the opportunity to officially recognize the winners of the Prix Gémeaux du multiculturalisme. The award will be presented to two productions: Idéacom's Chez-nous c'est ici, an episode in the series M'aimes-tu, directed by Tereza Barta, and Radio-Québec's Beau et chaud, directed by Pierre Duceppe, Pierre Théoret and Monique Miguet and hosted by Normand Brathwaite.

"Canadian Heritage is now in its seventh year of collaborating with the Académie canadienne du cinéma et de la télévision by presenting and promoting the Prix Gémeaux du multiculturalisme," saidMrs. Finestone. "This has sent a message about the importance of reflecting cultural diversity in our television programs to all of you who work in the industry."

In addition, Canadian Heritage will be providing funds to the Académie to add several apprenticeship awards to its apprenticeship program. This will give Radio-Québec and Idéacom the opportunity to provide on-the-job production training to a graduating student from a cultural community.

Mrs. Finestone added that the Department of Canadian Heritage has its own Arts Apprenticeship program for cultural communities, which had 132 applications this year, resulting in some 32 projects that will train apprentices from coast to coast in all areas of the arts and arts administration. Four projects will be in Montréal. The deadline for next year's competition is January 31, 1995.
