Government of Canada Supports Pride of Race, Unity, Dignity through Education

SAINT JOHN, July 22, 2005 -- Minister of State (Multiculturalism) Raymond Chan and Member of Parliament (Saint John) Paul Zed today announced $65,000 in funding for the Pride of Race, Unity, Dignity through Education (PRUDE) organization. The funds will enable the group to develop a comprehensive community awareness and education program that will encourage dialogue on diversity and multiculturalism in Saint John.

"I am pleased that the Government of Canada supports this organization's efforts to promote the values of multiculturalism among the residents of Saint John," said Mr. Zed.

"The Government of Canada is committed to supporting organizations that focus on cross-cultural understanding, dialogue, and connections across communities," said Minister of State Chan. "This is how we will build a more equitable society."

PRUDE will establish a Public Education and Awareness Advisory Committee to help organize activities, such as a multiculturalism and education conference, a survey on the demographics and needs of the Black community in Saint John, educational presentations on diversity and multiculturalism, and cultural awareness events for Black History Month.

Incorporated in 1981, PRUDE is dedicated to promoting the full participation of the Black community and other ethnocultural communities in New Brunswick's social, cultural, and economic life.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy, which falls under the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, promotes the full and equitable participation of people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to respect and promote Canada's multicultural character.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
