Government Of Canada Funds Equality Today Electronic Magazine/Media Outreach Project

OTTAWA, November 12, 1999 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), and Bob Wood, Member of Parliament, Nipissing, today announced a $50,000 grant to the Canadian Centre for Social Justice for the Equality Today Electronic Magazine/Media Outreach Project.

"I am proud to support the Canadian Centre for Social Justice's Equality Today Electronic Magazine/Media Outreach Project," said Dr. Fry. "It is wonderful that youth are talking to youth about the issues of racism, multiculturalism and diversity. With everyone working towards a society in which respect, equality, and diversity exist in unity, all Canadians, especially youth, will benefit now and in the future."

The Canadian Centre for Social Justice manages the Young People's Press, which develops articles for over 220 newspapers in Canada that are written by young people. The Canadian Centre for Social Justice also manages an electronic magazine called Equality Today. Young People's Press will create three special editions on race relations, multiculturalism and diversity for submission to newspapers throughout Canada. Electronic tutorials and workshops will be developed on working with media to eliminate racism and promote diversity. The project will also develop curriculum guides for High School teachers to promote the value of multiculturalism and contributions by immigrants to Canada.

The Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage serves three key purposes, all of which are dedicated to making Canada a better place to live. The Multiculturalism Program fosters Canadian identity and belonging, encourages all citizens to participate in shaping their communities and their country and creates a more just society by eliminating the barriers to society.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of the Government of Canada's commitment to the values of respect, equality and diversity.
