Government of Canada Funds Halton's Multicultural Council

OTTAWA, December 17, 1999 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), and Bonnie Brown, Member of Parliament for Oakville (Ontario), today announced funding of $55,000 to the Halton Multicultural Council's Building Bridges project.

"I am pleased to support the Halton Multicultural Council's Building Bridges project," said Dr. Fry. "In the Speech from the Throne, the Government of Canada made a commitment to achieving a higher quality of life for all Canadians. Building Bridges is an excellent project which focuses on eliminating barriers and enabling Canadians to feel a sense of belonging and attachment to Canada."

The Halton Multicultural Centre is a community-based agency dedicated to enabling individuals regardless of racial and ethnic origin, to participate as a member of the community through fostering mutual respect and understanding of one another.

Building Bridges is a two-year partnership project between the Halton Multicultural Council and the Halton Women's Place shelter, focussed on identifying and removing gaps in policies and services of the shelter that will have an impact on culturally/racially diverse women. The project's goal is to make the shelter barrier-free and accessible to all women in the Halton region.

The funding for this project was provided by the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
