Government of Canada Funds the Cambodian Women's Support Organization of Ontario

OTTAWA, December 21, 1999 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), and Joe Fontana, Member of Parliament for London - Adelaide (Ontario), today announced funding of $28,446 to the Cambodian Women's Support Organization of Ontario for its Community School Partnership Initiative.

"I am proud to support the Cambodian Women's Support Organization of Ontario's Community School Partnership Initiative," said Dr. Fry. "Canada's young people are the nation's most vibrant resource. The Cambodian Women's Support Organization is demonstrating great things by involving parents in the future of young Canadians."

The Cambodian Women's Support Organization of Ontario is committed to providing services for women and their families with the goal of self-sustainable growth. In promoting cooperative efforts between Canada and Cambodia in the areas of education and information, this organization fosters the development of communities as well as social, economic and educational development.

The Cambodian Women's Support Organization of Ontario in partnership with the Chippewa School, will focus on engaging parents in the decision-making process. The Community School Partnership Initiative will involve parents in the development of strategies, outreach to Cambodian families, leadership development and capacity building within the organization and development of culturally sensitive resources.

The funding was provided by the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
