The Government of Canada Announces Funds to the Round Table on Black History Month

MONTRÉAL, January 11, 2000 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), today announced funding of $32,000 to the Round Table on Black History Month.

"I am proud of this association with Black History Month. The Government of Canada recognizes the vital, inestimable contribution of black communities to the enrichment of Canadian society and that is why we have decided to support this initiative," said Dr. Fry. "An event such as Black History Month allows each and every one of us to broaden our knowledge of the various cultures that make our country wonderful and unique."

The Round Table on Black History Month comprises 80 member organizations in Québec's black communities who have the mandate to coordinate activities commemorating Black History Month. The organization's main objective is to promote, share and emphasize the achievements and contributions of black communities in Québec through educational and cultural activities.

This grant will enable the Round Table on Black History Month to produce a promotional calendar and poster, and to organize and coordinate program activities. The Round Table on Black History Month is seeking to heighten public awareness of the achievements and contributions of black communities in Canada.

This funding was provided by the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
