Government of Canada and Representatives of the Chinese Canadian Community Meet to Discuss Chinese Head Tax
Toronto, March 24, 2006 - Today, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and the Status of Women Beverley Oda, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister for Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney met with leaders from the Chinese Canadian community to discuss the Chinese head tax redress.The consultations represent an important first step toward justice for Chinese Canadians.
"Canada's new government is keeping its promise to Chinese Canadians," said Minister Oda.
Conservative Parliamentary Secretary Kenney agreed, "we will continue consultations to determine the most suitable form of redress.
"As the Prime Minister indicated in his first press conference, this government intends to keep its commitment to offer an apology on the Chinese Head Tax and Exclusion Act," added Kenney.
After years of delays, the Chinese Canadian community can expect a resolution. Canada's new government is acting quickly to keep its commitment, and to heal the wounds of the Chinese Head Tax.
