Government of Canada Announces Funding for Three Projects in Support of Multiculturalism

ST-JOHN'S Ñ March 21, 2002 -- Three Newfoundland and Labrador school and community projects, which celebrate Canadian cultural diversity and combat racial discrimination will receive Government of Canada funding. This was announced by Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) Gerry Byrne on behalf of Minister of Labour and Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Claudette Bradshaw. The projects are:

"Strike Back at Hate"

The Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Association is coordinating a series of cross-cultural activities for students at all grade levels, on the theme "Strike Back at Hate." The activities will take place on the Internet and focus on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Project partners include the Department of Education, the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association, and provincial school boards.

"Global Awareness Day"

A group of students working with the Assistant Principal of Holy Trinity High School is coordinating a variety of activities, workshops and displays that focus on multiculturalism, racism, the environment and March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The target audience is high school students from Holy Trinity, the community of Torbay, and invited students from selected urban schools.

Junior High School Instructional Kit

A Junior High School Religious Studies Instructional Kit, focussing on Hindu Religion and Culture, is being developed to supplement religious studies programming for grades 7, 8 and 9. The project will provide teachers and students throughout the province with text- and Web-based instructional materials on Hinduism.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, it gives me great pleasure to announce funding, in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, to support these important projects, which will allow Newfoundland and Labrador youth to celebrate the cultural and religious diversity," declared Minister Byrne.
The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this financial support through its Multiculturalism Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
