Government of Canada announces funding for the Festival des arts visuels en Atlantique

CARAQUET, August 13, 2003 -- Minister of Labour Claudette Bradshaw, on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $15,000 for the Festival des arts visuels en Atlantique Inc.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support projects that encourage dialogue between different communities," said Secretary of State Augustine. "Partnerships between communities contribute to strengthening the historic and cultural bonds that make up our national fabric. Together, we are building a Canada in which diversity is celebrated."

"The policy on multiculturalism has contributed to establishing an inclusive society where all cultures are respected," added Minister Bradshaw. "Today, all Canadians recognize the benefits that come with it."

The funding enabled the group to establish a partnership between Acadian cultural groups, multicultural community groups, Canadian artists of various multicultural backgrounds, and Aboriginal artists for the 8th edition of the Festival des arts visuels en Atlantique, which was held from July 3 to 6, 2003. Professional artists of different multicultural backgrounds each produced a work of art under the theme "L'être migratoire" (the migratory human being). Each artist was invited to showcase, through art, the essence of their cultural affiliation and their perception of the transient passage of the human being on earth.

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Multiculturalism Program. This program promotes full and equitable participation in Canadian society of people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
