Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Service de consultants en relations interculturelles Québec Multi Plus

MONTRÉAL, December 1, 2003 -- Lucienne Robillard, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament (Westmount-Ville-Marie), on behalf of Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine, today announced funding of $16,145 for the Service de consultants en relations interculturelles Québec Multi Plus, to help finance their efforts to integrate educated immigrants into the workforce.

"Immigrants from around the world enrich Canada with their ideas and talent," said Secretary of State Augustine. "The Government of Canada is proud to support projects such as this that help educated immigrants contribute to their full potential, for the benefit of all Canadians."

"Becoming integrated into the workforce is an excellent way for any citizen to contribute to our society," said Ms. Robillard. "I congratulate this organization for developing such an inclusive and interesting initiative."

The funding will be used to organize a symposium entitled Marché du travail, professions réglementées, diversité culturelle : mode d'emploi. This event is aimed at business owners, members of professional organizations, and professionally educated immigrants. It will focus on obstacles that prevent immigrants from fully participating in and integrating into the workforce. Recognition of foreign education and experience, particularly in terms of professional qualifications, will be one of the main topics discussed.

The Service de consultants en relations interculturelles Québec Multi Plus has held other symposia in the past and works with influential partners such as the Comité d'adaptation de la main-d'oeuvre pour personnes immigrantes.

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
