Government of Canada Announces Funding for Capital Region Race Relations Association

VICTORIA, December 8, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Jean Augustine today announced funding of $28,324 for the Capital Region Race Relations Association to support its Diverse Families project. This project will provide training for professionals who work with racially diverse families in the Greater Victoria area.

"The Capital Region Race Relations Association is a leader in community development," said Secretary of State Augustine. "The Government of Canada is proud to support the association's efforts to develop a training program that will encourage cross-cultural dialogue in communities in the Victoria area. The Diverse Families project will sensitize students, teachers, agencies, and the public to the issues faced by mixed race families and individuals in Canadian society. The workshops and educational materials will give service providers the tools they require to address problems of racism in communities and schools throughout the Capital Regional District and the rest of Canada."

Project activities involve the development of cross-cultural training and educational materials, including a Web-based Diverse Families Resource Centre. Project partners include British Columbia School District #61 (Greater Victoria), University of Victoria School of Social Work, Vancouver Island Public Interest Research Group, Vancouver Island Human Rights Coalition, Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society, and Victoria International Development Education Association.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Multiculturalism Program. Canada's Multiculturalism Policy promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
