Government of Canada Supports Anti-Racism Project for Youth

RICHMOND, April 25, 2005 -- The Honourable Raymond Chan, Minister of State (Multiculturalism), today announced funding of $30,000 for the Miscellaneous Productions Society. The funds will allow the Society to present an anti-racism theatrical production entitled "e-race," which focuses on the issues facing young people, including drug use and racism.

"This innovative project addresses some serious concerns facing young people of all backgrounds in our cities," said Minister of State Chan. "I'm happy to be able to encourage the Miscellaneous Productions Society's innovative use of theatre to promote cross-cultural understanding."

Founded in 2002, the Miscellaneous Productions Society merges community development with art, performance, and new media. This project will involve young people aged 15 to 26, who will work with a professional team of artists, technicians, and community support workers to create a theatrical production. Miscellaneous Productions Society was approached by community leaders from Richmond, Vancouver, and North Vancouver to explore the roots of street racing and issues of racism through the artistic process.

Canada's Multiculturalism Policy, which falls under the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, promotes full and equitable participation from people of all origins in Canadian society, as well as interaction between diverse individuals and communities. It also encourages public institutions to respect and promote Canada's multicultural character.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
