Government of Canada Supports National Public Education Human Rights Project

WINDSOR, June 10, 2005 -- Member of Parliament (Sarnia-Lambton) Roger Gallaway, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $123,900 in funding for the Centre in Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA) This funding will help finance a national education project to increase public awareness of human rights issues.

"Human rights and mutual respect are the foundations of healthy communities," said Mr. Gallaway. "I am proud that the Government of Canada is supporting a project that will help all Canadians better understand human rights issues. The project will also provide them with ways to participate as responsible citizens in society."

"The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of creating equal opportunities so that all Canadians can share in our country's prosperity," said Minister Frulla. "I am certain that this project will further improve awareness of human rights and help remove barriers to human rights in our communities."

The project will take a multifaceted, comprehensive approach to education on economic and social rights involving community-based organizations. It will be managed jointly by CERA and the Social Rights Advocacy Centre (SRAC). The funding will go towards research and the development of educational materials, workshops, and training sessions.

Established in 1987, CERA is an Ontario-based non-profit organization, with a mandate to promote human rights for housing and to remove the barriers that keep disadvantaged individuals and families from accessing and retaining the housing they need. SRAC is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to provide services to low-income persons.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Human Rights component of its Multiculturalism Program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
