Government of Canada Funds Junior Achievement of Toronto and York Region

TORONTO, November 12, 1999 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), today announced a $40,000 grant to the Junior Achievement of Toronto and York Region initiative.

"I am proud to support the Junior Achievement of Toronto and York Region initiative," said Dr. Fry. "The effort to make Canada a country where everybody enjoys respect, equality and diversity starts with educating our young people."

The initiative will educate students about diversity in the workplace. The project will focus on issues such as adaptability, acceptance, and respect for differences. The organization recognizes how diversity issues continue to challenge society and youth who will be joining the workforce. This project will be piloted in a select group of classes in Toronto and York Region. Students will learn about the importance of diversity in the workplace through educational games and activities. In addition, the project will involve developing a short video and a web site which will include video clips, activities, curriculum material, and on-line discussion forums for students.

The Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage serves three key purposes, all of which are dedicated to making Canada a better place in which to live. The Multiculturalism Program fosters Canadian identity and belonging, encourages all citizens to participate in shaping their communities and their country and creates a more just society by eliminating the barriers to society.

This initiative is an example of the Government of Canada's commitment to the values of respect, equality and diversity. Funding for this activity was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
