The Government of Canada Offers Financial Assistance to the Fête de la Fraternité 2000/2001

MONTRÉAL, March 14, 2000 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Hedy Fry today announced a $9,500 grant to the Centre interculturel peuplestrie optimum to organize the Fête de la Fraternité 2000/2001, being held on March 25, in Sherbrooke.

"I am proud of this association with the Centre interculturel peuplestrie optimum. The activities proposed during the event will help to promote mutual understanding," said
Dr. Fry. "They will also help to foster respect, equality and fraternity in our society."

The Centre interculturel peuplestrie optimum seeks primarily to encourage respect and social harmony among people of all origins. The organization is coordinating the Fête de la Fraternité 2000/2001 to underscore the 20th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The financial support will enable the Centre interculturel peuplestrie optimum to organize three activities in conjunction with the Fête de la Fraternité 2000/2001, including a series of six workshops, a forum entitled L'immigrant : Canadien ou Québécois? and a gala. The project's organizers are focusing on the social integration of recent immigrants to Québec.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has granted this financial assistance under its Multiculturalism Program. Provision for funding for this project was made in the February 1999 federal budget and is part of the existing financial framework.
