Government of Canada Provides Grant for Le racisme : comprendre pour agir Conference

MONTRÉAL, March 20, 2000 -- Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Hedy Fry today announced a $15,000 grant to Images Interculturelles for the organization of an international conference entitled Le racisme : comprendre pour agir, to be held on March 21 and 22 at the Université du Québec à Montréal, in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

"I am proud of this association with Images Interculturelles. This year is the International Year of the Culture of Peace and there is every reason to work together to combat racial discrimination," said Dr. Fry. "The two-day conference will undoubtedly contribute to strengthening social cohesion and the Canadian identity."

Images Interculturelles is seeking, among other things, to contribute to the establishment of harmonious intercultural relations and encourage debate on issues such as racism and pluralism.

The financial support will enable Images Interculturelles to organize the international conference entitled Le racisme : comprendre pour agir. The main objectives of the two-day event are to take stock of racism in the past 50 years, pinpoint new strategies to combat racism, and heighten public awareness of this multifaceted major problem.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has granted this financial assistance under its Multiculturalism Program. Provision for funding for this project was made in the February 1999 federal budget and is part of the existing financial framework.
