The town of Legal, located just 50 kilometres north of Edmonton, is Canada's National Capital of French Murals. Legal's francophone heritage has been vividly portrayed by several local artists on more than two dozen giant murals located throughout the town. These outdoor paintings depict the history of French settlers to Western Canada through the lens of local families and events that have shaped Legal as a community when the first French settlers arrived in the area in 1894.
Legal is an officially bilingual community. These murals are a source of pride for the town which has gained a reputation for its cultural awareness and diversity. Canadian Heritage, through its contributions along with Alberta Lotteries and Alberta Visual Arts, have helped to realize this cultural legacy in Alberta.
