Canada's New Government Supports Anti-Racism Project in Quebec
MONTRÉAL, December 13, 2006 - On behalf of Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced funding for Productions Jaune Camion. The funds will enable the organization to implement a program to raise awareness of racism among students in more than ten elementary schools in four school boards in the Montérégie, Lanaudière, Laurentians, and Mauricie regions."In a society as diverse as ours, it is important to help our young people recognize racism and its harmful effects, as well as how to deal with it," said Minister Oda. "That is why I am proud to support an organization that fights racism by giving young people an opportunity to learn about other cultures."
"This project will provide students with an opportunity to learn about racism and discuss the prejudices and stereotypes that it involves," said Minister Cannon. "By raising awareness of the tremendous asset that our diversity represents, we help ensure that Canadian society continues to be recognized for its fundamental values of openness, tolerance, and respect."
Productions Jaune Camion has played an important role in the fight against racism in Quebec schools for almost nine years. Elementary- and secondary school teachers make use of the workshops, theatrical works, and video productions produced by the organization to enhance other activities and raise awareness among their students. Productions Jaune Camion has been recognized by the Department of Justice for its commitment to creating safer communities in Canada.
Canada's New Government will provide $24,000 in funding through the Multiculturalism Program. This program of the Department of Canadian Heritage promotes the full and equitable participation in Canadian society by people of all origins, as well as interaction between individuals and communities of different origins. It also encourages public institutions to be respectful and inclusive of Canada's multicultural character.
