Denis Coderre Consults Quebec On The Future Of Amateur Sport

MAGOG, January 26, 2001 -- Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) Denis Coderre today welcomed delegates participating in the sixth and final regional conference on sport taking place in Magog on January 26 and 27, 2001. Mr. Coderre is finishing up a series of public consultations the objective of which is to improve the sports system in Canada. A new Canadian sports policy that will take into account the perspectives heard during these consultations will be developed soon.

"I am here to listen to what Quebec delegates have to say," declared Mr. Coderre. "Quebec has a tradition of sports excellence. It is recognized for having produced high-quality athletes."

Mr. Coderre was particularly happy with the participation of young delegates at the conference. "It is first and foremost for the young people that we are discussing the future of amateur sport. We can't speak of the future without giving the young people their say."

Mr. Coderre took the opportunity to thank Mr. Raymond Côté, President of Sport Quebec, for his cooperation.

Mr. Coderre also made public the results of a survey conducted by lnfras inc. from September 29 to October 9, 1999 among more than 1200 Quebeckers. The survey revealed that 46% of the respondents declared participating in a sport at least once a week. Moreover, 97% listed the maintaining of good health as a benefit of regular sporting activities, and 76% said they were convinced that it contributed significantly to the enhancement of all aspects of their lives.
