Government of Canada Announces Funding For the 2003 Grand Prix Cycliste De Beauce

OTTAWA, June 13, 2003 -- Paul DeVillers, Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) and Member of Parliament (Simcoe North) today announced funding of $40,000 to help organize the 2003 Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce.

"The Beauce Grand Prix gives our athletes the opportunity to take part in a high level cycling competition right here at home," said Claude Drouin, Secretary of State responsible for Canada Economic Development and Member of Parliament (Beauce). "Hosting international sport competitions helps develop the expertise of our sports organizations, inspires our young people, and offers Canadians a rare opportunity to cheer on our best athletes."

Provided through the International Single Sport Hosting Program, the funds will help fund the organization of this international event in the Beauce region.

"The Government of Canada is proud to contribute to the development of cycling and especially to the organization of the 2003 Grand Prix Cycliste de Beauce," said Mr. DeVillers. "This year, the Grand Prix de Beauce is a qualifying race for the Road Cycling Championships, which will be held in Hamilton, in the fall, and allow a greater number of Canadian athletes to take part. I wish good luck to all the cyclists, and I congratulate the members of the Organizing Committee for putting together such an important competition."

In 2002-03, the Government of Canada contributed $1,356,000 to the Canadian Cycling Association, in addition to providing direct support for 38 cyclists on the national team, in the form of monthly contributions through Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program.

The Government of Canada is also contributing $10 million for the 2003 Road Cycling Championships, taking place from October 6 to 12, in Hamilton.
