Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Tour de l'Abitibi Cycling Competition

OTTAWA, July 18, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport) Paul DeVillers today announced funding of $10,000 to help organize the Tour de l'Abitibi, a world-class level cycling competition.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support the efforts of promising young cyclists, and to assist in the organization of the Tour de l'Abitibi," said Secretary of State DeVillers. "I wish all the athletes good luck and I congratulate the organizing committee for putting together such an impressive event."

"Over the years, the Tour de l'Abitibi has helped create many champion cyclists, and it remains the most prestigious junior cycling competition in the world. We are very pleased to be able to foster our greatest athletic hopes, right here at home," said
Guy St- Julien, Member of Parliament (Abitibi Baie-James Nunavik). "Hosting international sport competitions helps develop the expertise of our local sports organizations. At the same time, the experience inspires our young people and offers Canadians a rare opportunity to come out and cheer on our best athletes."

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through Sport Canada's International Single Sport Hosting Program. In 2002-2003, the Government of Canada provided funding of $1,346,000 to the Canadian Cycling Association, as well as provided direct support for 38 cyclists on the national team with monthly contributions through Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program.

Funding for the initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
