Government of Canada Announces Funding for Rendez-vous Canada Judo 2003

OTTAWA, October 17, 2003 -- Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport) Paul DeVillers today announced funding of $15,000 to help organize the 2003 edition of the Rendez-vous Canada Judo competition.

"The Rendez-vous Canada Judo competition exposes young judokas to high-level international competition right here at home," said Secretary of State DeVillers. "Canadians have the opportunity to cheer on our younger judokas and to watch some of Canada's best high-level judokas during two days of competition."

The Rendez-vous Canada Judo competition is an opportunity for Canadian judokas to obtain points toward their status on the Canadian Judo Team. Now in its seventh year, the competition will host 15 international teams, including Great Britain, Mexico, the United States, Peru, Australia, and New Zealand. The competition takes place October 18 and 19, at Pierre-Charbonneau Centre in Montréal.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to support the development of our Canadian athletes, and this event offers important competitive opportunities. Good luck to all our athletes," added Secretary of State DeVillers.

In 2002-03, the Government of Canada contributed $601,000 to Judo Canada, including $25,000 for athletes with a disability.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
