Government of Canada Congratulates Beckie Scott on Gold Medal and Fight Against Doping

OTTAWA, December 18, 2003 -- Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Sport) Stan Keyes today congratulated Beckie Scott on being awarded the gold medal for the 5-km cross-country skiing event at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made the announcement following the International Court of Arbitration's decision to rescind Russian skier Olga Danilova's victory in the event.

"I had the distinct privilege of speaking with Ms. Scott today to congratulate her on winning Canada's first gold medal in cross-country skiing. Her years of training and dedication to drug-free sport make her a shining example to all Canadian athletes," said Minister of State Keyes. "All Canadians, from coast to coast to coast, are proud of Ms. Scott's historic achievement."

Ms. Scott originally placed third in the 5-km event behind Danilova and Larissa Lazutina, also from Russia. In a subsequent race, both Danilova and Lazutina tested positive for doping in the 30-km classical race in Salt Lake. The IOC's International Court of Arbitration rescinded Lazutina's medal in June 2003 and, today, also stripped Danilova of the gold.

"Ms. Scott is a true role model. She has conducted herself with so much grace, humility and class during this whole process," added Minister Keyes. "I would also like to commend the Canadian Olympic Committee and other members of the sport community for their unwavering support for Ms. Scott during this process. This demonstrates that working together will mean a stronger and better sport system for all."

Canada remains one of the leading nations in the world in the fight against doping in sport. The independent Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport is recognized as one of the most effective national anti-doping agencies in the world.
