Government of Canada Committed to Making 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Canada's Games

VANCOUVER, April 22, 2005 -- The Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport), will participate tomorrow in the unveiling of the new Vancouver 2010 Olympic Emblem at General Motors Place, in Vancouver. The event will be broadcast live across the country.

"The Government of Canada is committed to making the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Canada's Games. This means that Canadians from all backgrounds will have a chance to participate in this international sporting event," said Minister Owen. "As the Games approach, Canadians from across the country should have an opportunity to get involved. Whether you are a volunteer, a business owner, an athlete, a cultural performer, a student or a teacher, it's time to start preparing for the Games."

The new emblem will be the primary identifier of the 2010 Winter Games. It will become a recognized symbol in Canada and around the world over the next five years.

"Hosting the 2010 Winter Games will generate important social benefits, including work, training, and volunteering opportunities, as well as youth and Aboriginal participation. In addition, these Games will renew emphasis on fitness," said Minister Owen. "The Government of Canada is honoured to work with its partners in this venture, all of whom are dedicated to ensuring a successful and fiscally responsible event of international significance."

The Government of Canada is a full partner in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and, to date, has committed $497 million towards their success. Vancouver and Whistler will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games from February 12 to 28 and from March 12 to 21, 2010, respectively.
