Denis Coderre Announces Federal Funding for World Sport for all Congress

OTTAWA, February 9, 2000 -- The Honourable Denis Coderre, Secretary of State (Amateur Sport), on behalf of the Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced that the Government of Canada will contribute $125,000 to support the World Sport for All Congress being held in Quebec City from May 18 to 21, 2000. The Department of Canadian Heritage will contribute $100,000 and the Department of Health will contribute $25,000.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to support this prestigious event," said Mr. Coderre. "Sport is an activity that has benefits for every person, for their communities and for the world. By providing funding for this World Congress, we are demonstrating our continued commitment to sport as a powerful tool for human and social development around the globe. Canadians' love of sport makes us a fitting host and partner for this Congress," he added.

Minister Copps has expressed her support for this important event. "Sport is an important aspect of our Canadian identity and that is why the Government of Canada is committed to the development of the Canadian sport system and to promote Canada on the world stage. That explains why this Congress is so important," she said.

Sport for All is a global movement which promotes sport and physical activity, for everyone in society as a way to improve health and quality of life.

This VIIIth World Congress will examine government policy relating to Sport for All and will be an important occasion for stimulating new and creative ways of making sport available to people around the world. The Government of Canada is participating on the planning committee for the Congress.
