Recording industry study receives funding under Canada-B.C. agreement

VICTORIA, September 13, 1995 The Vancouver-based Pacific Music Industry Association will receive a contribution under the Canada-B.C. Agreement on Communications and Cultural Industries to study the sound recording industry in British Columbia, Canadian Heritage Minister Michel Dupuy and B.C. Minister of Small Business, Tourism and Culture Bill Barlee announced today.

"There is a serious lack of basic information on the size, economic impact and operating environment of the sound recording industry in British Columbia. Such information is vital to making sound decisions related to marketing and development. This support from the Canada-B.C. agreement will fill that information void," said Mr. Dupuy.

Mr. Barlee said: "British Columbia is an important player in the world recording industry. However, the lack of reliable information has been frustrating industry and governments when it comes to developing and implementing effective growth and marketing strategies. The findings of this study will increase awareness of the industry's strengths and needs and form a basis for government policy and industry action plans."

The $60,000 funding allocation for this project is part of the Canada-B.C. agreement, a two-year, $9 million federal-provincial initiative designed to help develop and apply innovative technology, to create new markets for products and services, and to strengthen the industrial infrastructure by sharing costs with project proponents.

The agreement is administered by Industry Canada and Canadian Heritage on the federal side, and on the provincial side by the Ministry of Employment and Investment and the Ministry of Small Business, Tourism and Culture.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1995 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of how this government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
