Minister Copps Announces Funding for the Jeux de la Francophonie Canadienne

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, April 22, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced financial support for the second edition of the Jeux de la francophonie canadienne. The Department of Canadian Heritage will contribute $900 000 toward the event, which will take place in Rivière-du-Loup from August 1 to 5.

Also present at the announcement were Rivière-du-Loup Mayor Jean D'Amour, the President of the Corporation des Jeux 2002 Carol Jean, and the President of the Fédération de la jeunesse canadienne-française (FJCF) Michel Hamon-Liboiron.

"The Jeux are a unique focal point for young Francophones and Francophiles throughout Canada," said Minister Copps. "They are the perfect opportunity for them to express their solidarity and to celebrate what they have in common. Such events are essential in helping Canada's French-speaking community to flourish."

"The federal government's level of involvement demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting initiatives for Francophone youth," said Mayor Jean D'Amour. "It's also a powerful boost for the hundreds of volunteers from Rivière-du-Loup who are already involved in organizing the 2002 games."

The Jeux de la francophonie canadienne include both cultural and sport events. While competition is a feature, these games are first and foremost an opportunity for the participants to gather together and get to know each other. Those participating will be Francophones or Francophiles between the ages of 15 and 18, from all parts of Canada.

The Jeux are an initiative of the FJCF, which together with the City of Rivière-du-Loup, will ensure the smooth running of the event. The first Jeux de la francophonie canadienne took place in Memramcook, New Brunswick, in August 1999, and were a great success.

More than 1 200 young people are expected to participate in this second edition of the Jeux de la francophonie canadienne.
