Government of Canada Announces Funding for a Show on the French-Speaking People in North America

EMBRUN, May 16, 2002 -- The Honourable Don Boudria, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, on behalf of the Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding for Francoscénie, a group of some 60 volunteers, artists and businesspeople from Eastern Ontario. This group is responsible for creating a blockbuster show whose theme is the story of the French-speaking people in North America.

Under its Official-Language Community Support Program, Canadian Heritage will contribute $48,500 to develop and promote the show. The funds will enable Francoscénie to hire more personnel and undertake a campaign to recruit volunteers.

"Projects like this are important for official-language minority communities. They unite a community in support of one initiative, and strengthen its sense of belonging," said Minister Boudria.

Organizers have been working on this project since spring 2000 and intend to begin presenting the show in summer 2003. This grandiose, innovative and historic show will be held in the Larose Forest of Eastern Ontario. It will bring numerous advantages on the tourism, economic and cultural aspects of this region.
