The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Association Régionale de la Côte Ouest

GRAND TERRE, August 7, 2002 -- Bill Matthews, Member of Parliament (Burin-St. George's), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $92,800 for the Association régionale de la côte ouest, to help finance its 2002-2003 programming.

"The funding demonstrates the commitment of the Government of Canada to foster development of the Francophone and Acadian culture in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Mr. Matthews. "With this financial assistance, official-language minority communities will be able to build strong and dynamic communities and establish a strong legacy for young Francophones."

The financial help will allow the three member groups of the Association régionale de la côte ouest Les Terre-Neuviens Français, L'Héritage de l'Île Rouge and Chez les français de l'Anse-à-Canards to promote the French language and culture to all Francophones and Acadians across the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Financial assistance for this project is provided through the Canada-Community Agreements of the Official Languages Support Programs five-year agreements (1999-2004), whose objective is to support the development of official-language communities living in a minority situation.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
